Under One Roof: Asheville’s Unhoused / From Georgia

Do you mind if I come closer for the next photo?

“Some people think I am intimidating.”

Your eyes are too kind to be scary.

Where are you from originally? Georgia.

How long have you been out here on the street? For years. I’d like to open a speakeasy or something like that.

This was one of my first street portraits. I was so focused on holding a conversation while trying to get my camera settings right that I completely forgot his name and all the questions I wanted to ask. Now, I record voice notes immediately after conversations to capture the important details. I’ve been trying to find him to follow up.

I was captivated by the contrast between his intensity and his introspective peacefulness.
